Let It Go!

I have carefully analysed my own feelings when I was in deep pain. In fact I have noticed when I am in deep pain or agony I do not see the things around me clearly. It is like I am in another dimension or world (like Stranger Things or Spell Binder) where everything else ( the things like job, salary, and other material things) become so immaterial. I have also realised that the more I try to look up for solutions or more I try to find ways to get out, the pain becomes doubled or sometimes trippled.  Something else I have noticed is the sense of power and control when I am in pain. I tend to think I am the least powerful person with no control at all which also leads to the idea that right now I am the most victimised person in the world ( which is extremely big lie).  However, when I am happy I can takr things very nuetrally and I can be indifferent. Sadness is the feeling that destabilises me the the most. I only tend to relax when I try to see myself as someone totall...

The reason we love sports

I am and have been an ardent cricket fan since grade 2 or thee. Whenever I watch a cricket match, I want to shout and imitate the actions of the players. This process (or to be more accurate this madness) always makes me to think why do we love sports? It is to do with self-identification with players and catering to the need to nurture ego? Do we like to imagine ourselves as the players who are cheered, applauded in the ground? Is it to with the prime instinct to defeat someone and showing to the victory shout to others. In my personal opinion, sports are a perfect example of a crossroads at which humans are trapped in the process of evolution. If you take a look at the successful sportspeople and their signature celebration of their little moments, you will realise where I am heading! Players like to roar, dance or even flip: all these movements can be easily compared with the victory dances performed by the pre-hisotoric human being after a successful hunt. The difference between th...

Sisyphus Myth

Sisyphus is a mythological character who is often cited for his action of rolling a boulder up a hill only to find it fall down every time it nears the top. Nevertheless, Sisyphus repeatedly pushes it up. The mythological analogy is often used to illustrate the absurdity of life as well as powerful metaphor in philosphy to be interpreted in several ways.

Problem with Sri Lankan Education System

When I was in primary school, my friends used to tell that they wanted to be doctors, engineers and pilots... I never wanted to be a doctor, engineer or even a pilot ( does not mean that I disrespect these professions, but I simply did not want to be. A little later the list go expanded: lawyer, cricketer, or even a lecturer ( I also wanted to be a cricketer but more than I wantrd to be a cricket commentator and even now I have that dream. I used to imitate all the star commentators commentaries and that is why I think I fell in love with English language. I imagine that I was in Sydney Cricket Ground or Kettarama Ground and I bowled a delivery imitating Brett Lee, Glenn McGrath or Lasith Malinga and I also became the batsman who faced the delivery. To make things more energetic and live I used to give a live commentary for every action of bowler, batsman or the fielder. It was a quite experience of multitasking and I played complete matches between countries. I even ran between t...

English for Specific Purposes: A Gap needs to be filled

The use of English language in different disciplines is researched worlwide by many researchers. Business English, English in Scieince and language acquistion ar3 such research avenues. However, there seems to be a lacuna on the use of English in sports literature. English seems to be dominant language in sports commentary and reporting. But researchers or academicians have paid no attention at all how the journalists, commentators or sportsprople are using the language.

Homo Sapiens vs Neandarthals

The new resolution

The people who have made a real difference are the people who really enjoy what they are doing and doing what they are enjoying... I have made a promise to myself that I would record everything that happens at my workplace. Perhaps when I will be free or when I have time, I will flesh out this notes and publish it as a book. Working at DELT UoK is kind of my dreams. I always wanted to work as a temporary lecturer. However, that is not today's topic. I would like to write about testing and evaluation in English language courses and specially in TESL degree programme.  I have learnt two new concepts today. The first is the bell curve and the second on is validity of the test. Both of them are to do with testing and evaluation. In layman's terms validity of the test refers to the performance of the student including that of the teacher. It means that if your students collectively fail to achieve the learning outcomes it reflects your own poor performance as a teacher.  I also rea...
